The artistic process, the arrangement of elements, materials, and technique into a composition, lies at the heart of Christina Baumann’s first solo exhibition with Suburbia Contemporary, ORDO. The title, derived from the Latin word for order, reflects the artist’s practice of bringing these components into relation within the pictorial space. Working in layers, Baumann begins with coloured pencil, followed by pastel, at times acrylic, and concludes with oil pastel or oil paint. This mixed-media approach produces textures and formations, ordered by the artist into non-figurative, composite landscapes, reminiscent of architecture.
The surface becomes the site where subject and object intersect, where material and intention converge. The two-dimensional plane shifts into a layered visual field with depth and structure, establishing a place of its own. The distinction between space and place, rooted in humanist geography, becomes tangible here. Space, understood as a physical dimension, becomes place through human intervention. Through this, meaning is constituted; the texture of a place emerges, shaped through interaction and lived experience.
Christina Baumann, born in Witzenhausen and based in Leipzig, studied Fine Arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden and completed her Meisterschüler studies under Peter Bömmels. Her works has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout Germany, and are held in several public collections, such as the Kunstfonds of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
