Pieter Vermeersch (1973, Kortrijk, Belgium) lives and works in Turin, Italy.
The painterly canon has been a question, problem, challenge, and field of reflection in Vermeersch’s work for many years. He has been consistently reformulating his questions about painting—its tradition, medium, and history—often measuring it against photography, architecture, matter, and the notion of time.
With representation and abstraction as parameters, Vermeersch’s oeuvre triggers perceptual experiences between appearance and disappearance, where the two- and three-dimensional, the immaterial and the tangible, and time and space become blurred.
In recent developments, Vermeersch incorporates geological materials into his gradient fields of color, deepening both the physical and conceptual resonance of his work. These interventions heighten the seductive qualities of his gradients, pushing them toward a visual philosophy in which past, present, and future fold into a single, unified experience.
